I like Lost Odyssey, really I do, but it does have some problems. The game is very cinematic and dialogue heavy, to its detriment. The game is four discs long, which is pretty much unheard of in this next generation of consoles. And those discs comprise mainly of story, not of locations to visit and creatures to fight. I like a good story, and Lost Odyssey does have a good story, but there is just way too much of it. I hate having to sit through half and hour of cutscenes and dialogue, I want to save the game and go outside! And that’s another problem, you can only save the game at certain places, which can be pretty spread apart, and sometimes means you have to backtrack for an hour or more if you see the game over screen. Can be annoying, especially when, and I’ll say it again, I want to go outside and I need to play for another 45 minutes to find the save cube. Still, the good outweighs the bad, and this game has great graphics, a great story (even if it is long winded), nice turn based combat, fun enemies, and adds new experiences to the RPG genre. So if you like RPGs, you’re probably going to like Lost Odyssey, just try not to fall asleep during those marathon cutscenes, you might just miss the battle afterward

    • Whoa! This one is a stinker!
I read a lot of good reviews about this game and was looking forward to a good rpg. This game seems to be loosely geared toward a western audience but reeks of JRPG stink. I mean you need to really enjoy that typical nonsensical japanese writing to enjoy it. It looks like they tried to give the characters a more western style appearance as well, but it seems that they just couldn’t help themselves and had to make the main character look like a drag queen. I played this game for many hours but i couldn’t get into the main character or any of his immortal buddies, i just didn’t care that he lived for a 1000 years, boo hoo hoo, get over it. Everyone seemed to soil their pants over the 1000 year dream sequence thing, but really its just a wallpaper background with some sounds effect and a fairly lengthy story to read. Most of the stories were drab and i thought about just skipping them, but there were 1 or 2 that i felt were actually really well written. The battles in this game are so devoid of excitement as well, there is one attack animation for every character and its just same one over and over and over. They added some kind of button timing scheme to “spice” things up, but good god man, you just push a button and release it during each attack sequence, oh thats so spicy! In conclusion, i hate this game, i hate it so very much.

Just as a counterpoint to the overwhelming good reviews of this game, here are a few things you should know before buying this game.

      1) Make sure you enjoy Japanese-style RPGs, because they have a format which, unless you’re a fan, can be extremely tedious and repetitive. It’s a lot of turn-based fighting over-and-over again, watching the characters taking their turns in orderly fashion to hit the bad guys. If you like that sort of thing, great, but if you don’t, it will get old fast.

      2) The story and dramatics of the game are pretty corny and occasionally obnoxious.

      3) The pacing of the game is pretty awful at times. There will be very long stretches where you have to make your way through a maze only to be interrupted a dozen times by the same random battle encounter. There will be very long stretches of long cutscenes. There will be very long stretches of wandering around for the sake of wandering around.

      4) Games where you can’t save your progress at will have always seemed mistaken to me, but here there will be maddeningly long spaces between Save points. Um, sometimes you’re just ready to put the game down right? This is most annoying where there is some sort of difficult boss battle long after the most recent Save.

I hate to sound overly negative about this game, it has its good points, (or maybe it just appealed to the obsessive-compulsive in me) but I just wanted to make it clear to potential players that this game, in my opinion, isn’t as great as most reviews out there say, nor does it break much new ground in game design.

    • The first good RPG for the X-BOX 360
Lost Odyssey was created by some of the people behind the Final Fantasy series, and you can tell right away. In fact this is how FF 12 should have been like in stead of the average game that was given to use.

There are many things to like about Lost Odyssey. First the unique premise. A Immortal whose lived a thousand years, but wakes up with no memory, and as the journey continues you slowly remember. The second thing was the difficulty of the game. I haven’t played a really hard RPG in years, I enjoyed it even when it frustrated me because I kept dying, it make you enjoy the game even more when you beat the game. Third the dream sequences were good also, and emotional. Finally the music was great, I really enjoyed it.

Now on to the reasons why I only gave it a 8. Some of the reasons are the same as why I liked the game. First the story was good, but takes way to long to get going. Second the dream seqences went on forever, and got tiring. Finally the load times in the game were to long and annoying. This is supposed to be a 360 game right. The load time shouldn’t take to long.

Overall Lost Odyssey is a very good game, though not great. This game isn’t for everyone, just RPG fans.

    • Just OK
Reasonable game with a good plot line. The graphics are good, but the overall feel to the game is about 10 years ago. The interactions with people and the towns are very primative unless you activate some plot line in doing so. The maps are linear and the “turn” fighting style lacks the excitement and challenge of a real RPG. In fact, the random fight activation is more a aggrivation than a challenge. In a given map you just fight the same characters over and over again. Buy this game if you have 40 or so hours to kill and are waiting for something great to come out.
