Xbox 360 Red Ring of Death Repair Guide

Published on Friday, April 23, 2010 by admin

This is a guide for how to fix your XBOX 360 if you get the 3 flashing red lights that indicate the “red ring of death.” My 360 had the 0102 error code, but this fix works for many, if not all, of the “red ring” errors. To find out what error code your box has go to http://forum.teamxbox.com/showthread.php?t=472553. I do not show the 360 working afterward (or not working before) because I figured that either way, you have to trust me that it was “red ringed” before and that it worked after. I could have shown you before and after, but I also could have done that and just switched consoles. I did neither. This is a real fix and it really worked in the case of the console in this video.

This video was excellent and I followed the directions. At the point of testing we had two red lights not three. I left it on for about 1/2 hour and then it went to 3 red lights. So, I added a bit more torque to the screws holding the heat sinks thinking it wasn’t tight enough. Then it started working. After using 1/2 hour we let it rest overnight. Today we used it about 3 hours with no problem. Great video.

very interesting…i was told that by a friend and of course never tried it myself because i didn’t want it to happen if it was true. i thought i should probably put it in the video as a precaution though in case it was true

Looks like a good fix to me.

    • I don’t know for …
I don’t know for sure how it works, but microsoft can detect whether the DVD drive is connected when you turn it on and if it is not, then it is very clear that you opened up and messed with your console. As you may or may not know, microsoft does not allow any type of modified consoles to play on xbox live. If they could detect what I do in this video, I’m sure they wouldn’t allow that either, but it’s purely mechanical, so they can’t.

It is entirely possible that you know more about this than I do. I just read that the overheating and torquing is the cause and that bolting it to the frame is a possible fix and I figured out a way and it worked for me.

    • Actually, I am …
Actually, I am quite sure by now that it is not temporary. It works because it keeps the motherboard from torquing when it gets hot which is what causes the red ring errors. But beyond that, it has been working long enough for me now that even if it is “temporary” it is long lasting enough that it is definitely worth it.

    • just a temporary fix
      just a temporary fix
